Generic or branded: what actually differs
The question comes up constantly, so here is the answer up front.
A generic contains the same active ingredient, in the same amount and the same form, as the original branded product. It has to demonstrate that it delivers a comparable level into the bloodstream before it can be sold at all.
What can differ: the inactive ingredients, the shape of the tablet, the colour, sometimes whether it can be split, and the name on the box.
So why do they exist? Because developing a new medicine costs an enormous amount, and that is recovered during the patent period. Once the patent expires, other manufacturers can make the same compound without repeating the research.
